Program Description

The Department of Psychiatry at Regions Hospital offers a structured and comprehensive post-graduate program to Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners interested in advanced training in Psychiatry. The program providers clinical and didactic experiences in adult inpatient and outpatient psychiatry, as well as in related medical specialties, to foster critical thinking, interprofessional collaboration, competence, and confidence, helping the APC fellow successfully transition into the role of Psychiatry APC at an accelerated rate.

Length of Program: 12 months

Class Size: 1 fellow per cohort, 2 cohorts per year

Start Dates: January and June

Recruitment: Application will open in winter 2027 for a June 2027 start date

Program Curriculum

Clinical

Psychiatry APC Fellows spend a significant portion of their training in psychiatry, including adult inpatient, crisis, and outpatient services. They also rotate with medical specialties that are deemed essential for proficiency in psychiatry.

Didactic

Based on program core competencies guided by the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition), the APC fellows participate in weekly lectures with the psychiatry physician residents, monthly journal club and psychiatry grand rounds, and quarterly ethics grand rounds. These compliment the clinical experiences to foster the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively assess, coordinate, and deliver evidence-based and cost-effective care to adult patients with acute and chronic psychiatric diseases. 

Schedule

Psychiatry APC fellows work Monday-Friday day shifts with some evening, overnight, and weekend shifts. They are expected to cover 4 evening and 2 overnight house officer shifts 5-8pm and 5pm-8am or 8pm-8am respectively) per month. APC fellows can expect to work approximately 40 hours per week with some variability depending on which rotation they are in.
